I am looking to sell my practice in Fairbanks, Alaska. As an opportunity for a potential buyer/associate to evaluate the potential, I am offering a 9-month position for 2019. I will work about 3 months and the associate will work about 9 months with considerable flexibility.
I have a one person practice that is split roughly 50/50 large/small animal. Equine work predominates the large animal work so good equine skills are essential. The rest of the large animal is a mix of cows, goats, sheep, pigs, and a variety of other ruminants. Most of the large animal work is April to October with little activity in the winter.
Normal office hours are 9-12 and 3-6 M-F. The 12-3 slot is reserved for personal time. It also allows for drop-ins and acute cases to be handled on a daily basis. It is extremely rare that you do not have 2 hours off mid-day. Clients are scheduled on 30-minute blocks and are generally easy to please. The clinic is completely non-computerized. All records are paper. I have one assistant who works as receptionist, bookkeeper, and tech. I do not rely on a cell phone for running my business because the service is unpredictable. An answering machine in the clinic is checked when I return from being out of the clinic. I handle all of my own emergencies. There are no regular weekend hours. I see patients on weekends on an emergency basis if I am around the clinic.
There are 2 housing options available for the associate on the property. There is an apartment attached to the clinic for winter or summer use, and a cabin that is typically used for the summer months.
For 2019 I have scheduled the following absences from the clinic: Jan 7 to March 4; April 14 to June 1; June 9-26; most of July, Aug and Sept. I plan on working November and December with October completely undecided.
The practice is located in a residential neighborhood where the average lot size is 5 acres. A trail system runs through the property that is groomed as a cross-country ski trail in the winter and used for running, biking, and horse trail-riding in the summer. From November through March you can step out the door, put on your skis and traverse over 20 miles of trails. Over the years I have averaged 150 days skiing a year.
The closest elementary school, Pearl Creek, has consistently received high marks and is within walking distance. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is 2 miles away with numerous cultural/academic opportunities available to the public. Our international airport is 12 minutes away with direct flights to the lower 48.
I am looking at selling the practice in 2020. This is very flexible, and if both parties agree to the 9-month/3-month arrangement an association could work for a few years. This will be a turnkey sale. The clinic is on the ground floor and living quarters are upstairs. All equipment, supplies and pharmacy go with the sale. I will be able to finance the sale.
There have been tremendous tax advantages to having the house and clinic together. The clinic has more square footage than the living quarters, so the tax advantages are very significant. My CPA knows how to use the tax code to its fullest benefit and I am very willing to share this information.
I will pay the associate $3000 a week and this includes all emergency/weekend work. Overall this is not a mentoring position. I will be out of Fairbanks and generally without any contact options on my time off. It is fine if the associate wants to assist me when I am working in the clinic.
Those interested in the position can contact me via phone, email or snail mail. I will be out a good portion of the summer and fall but feel free to call and see if I am in. I will be returning calls between trips. Also feel free to talk to my relief vet for a review of the practice. I will be gone June 14-25, June 28-July16, July 22-Aug 15, and Sept 28-Oct 27.
